Terpenes in Live Resin: Why Flavour Matters

If you have ever wondered why one vape cart tastes like fresh berries while another tastes like pine forest, the answer is terpenes. These aromatic compounds are the secret behind the flavour, aroma, and even the effects of every cannabis strain, and understanding them will transform how you choose your vapes.
What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are organic compounds produced by plants, and they are responsible for the distinctive smells and flavours of everything from lavender to lemons to cannabis. The cannabis plant produces over 200 different terpenes, each contributing to the unique character of individual strains.
In nature, terpenes serve as a defence mechanism, repelling pests and attracting pollinators. For humans, they provide sensory pleasure and, crucially, therapeutic effects that go far beyond simple flavour.
The Major Cannabis Terpenes
Myrcene
The most abundant terpene in cannabis, myrcene has an earthy, musky aroma with hints of tropical fruit. It is the dominant terpene in most indica strains and is responsible for the "couch lock" effect. Myrcene is also found in mangoes, hops, and thyme. Strains high in myrcene promote deep relaxation and sleep.
Limonene
As the name suggests, limonene smells like citrus. It is uplifting, stress-relieving, and mood-elevating. Found abundantly in sativa strains, limonene is also present in lemon peels, orange rinds, and juniper. Strains high in limonene tend to produce energetic, happy effects.
Caryophyllene
A spicy, peppery terpene found in black pepper, cloves, and cinnamon. Caryophyllene is unique because it also acts as a cannabinoid, binding directly to CB2 receptors in the body. This gives it anti-inflammatory properties beyond what other terpenes offer. Common in hybrid strains.
Linalool
The terpene responsible for the calming scent of lavender. Linalool is a powerful relaxant with anti-anxiety and sedative properties. It is a key component in many indica strains and contributes to the soothing, stress-melting effects that make indica live resin so effective before bed.
Pinene
The most common terpene in nature, pinene has a fresh pine and forest aroma. It promotes alertness, memory retention, and focus. Pinene also has bronchodilator properties, meaning it can help open airways. Prevalent in sativa and sativa-dominant hybrid strains.
Humulene
An earthy, woody terpene also found in hops and coriander. Humulene has appetite-suppressant properties, making it the opposite of myrcene in that regard. It is present in many hybrid strains and contributes to the complex, herbal character of certain live resins.
Why Live Resin Preserves Terpenes Better
Terpenes are volatile compounds, meaning they evaporate easily at relatively low temperatures. This is why the traditional process of drying and curing cannabis destroys a significant portion of the terpene content. Some estimates suggest that up to 55% of terpenes are lost during standard drying.
Live resin sidesteps this problem entirely by flash-freezing the plant immediately after harvest, locking in the terpenes at their peak concentration. The entire extraction process then occurs at low temperatures to prevent terpene degradation. The result is an extract that contains 5-15% terpenes compared to less than 1% in distillate.
Live resin typically retains 5-15% terpene content. Distillate retains less than 1%. This is why the flavour and effects are incomparable.
Botanical vs Cannabis-Derived Terpenes
An important distinction that the UK market often glosses over. Botanical terpenes are derived from non-cannabis plants (lemons, lavender, pine trees) and are added to distillate to create flavour. Cannabis-derived terpenes (CDTs) come from the cannabis plant itself. Live resin contains the original cannabis terpenes as they naturally exist in the strain.
While botanical terpenes can smell similar, they lack the complexity and nuance of cannabis-derived terpenes. A limonene molecule from a lemon is chemically identical to one from cannabis, but the specific ratio and combination of dozens of terpenes in live resin creates a profile that botanical blends simply cannot replicate.
Terpene Profiles of Our Strains
Each of our live resin strains has a distinct terpene profile that defines its character:
- Cookie Dawg (Indica): Dominant myrcene and caryophyllene. Sweet grape and earthy cookie flavours with deep body relaxation
- Gelato33 (Hybrid): Balanced limonene and caryophyllene. Creamy, dessert-like sweetness with euphoric, full-body effects
- Juicy Z (Exotic Hybrid): High limonene and myrcene. Berry and grape soda aromas with uplifting head high and body relaxation
- Candy Cane (Hybrid): Menthol-forward with pinene and terpinolene. Minty sweetness with an uplifting, focused high
How to Taste Terpenes Properly
To get the most from your live resin terpenes, vape at the lowest comfortable voltage (2.4V to 2.8V). Take slow, gentle draws and let the vapour sit on your palate before exhaling. The first few hits from a fresh cart are where the terpene expression is strongest, so savour them.
